Optimal Spare Capacity Design for Various ATM Protection Switching Methods

Todays broadband ATM networks are much more sensitive to failures of network elements since even during a short disconnection a large amount of data can be lost. Diierent restoration mechanisms have been proposed for preserving network performance by routing the aaected traac streams over still intact network parts. However, the appropriate application of these mechanisms requires the provision of additional capacity on the network links. In this paper a classiication of restoration mechanisms for VP-based ATM networks is given and a subset of these mechanisms { the so called protection switching methods { is considered in detail. Our objective is to determine the optimal set of restoration paths and the minimum amount of spare link band-widths so that no traac is lost in case of arbitrary single failures. Mathematical optimization models and solution procedures for ve diierent ATM protection switching methods are presented. The procedures have been applied sucessfully to a German 23 node wide-area ATM network example.
